How AI credits work
The assistant costs us real money every time it answers, so it's the one thing that can't be unlimited at these prices. Rather than bill you in tokens — a unit nobody outside software thinks in — credits are counted in whole actions:
- 💬1 credit — one reply from the assistant, however much work it did to get there.
- 📥20 credits — one AI-assisted spreadsheet import, however many rows.
It's one pool per ranch shared between the two, and it refills on your billing date rather than on the first of the month. A question that takes the assistant eight steps to answer still costs you one credit — the complicated ones are on us, which is the whole point of pricing by the action instead of by the token.
Run out and the rest of Land & Herd keeps working exactly as it did. The assistant is the only thing that pauses, and it comes back when the pool refills.
What happens when the beta ends
We'd rather tell you now than surprise you later. Here's what we're committing to.

You'll get plenty of warning
Nothing changes overnight and nothing changes silently. You'll know well before your account is affected, with the numbers in front of you.

Nothing you entered gets deleted
If you end up on a plan smaller than your records, the ones over the cap are hidden, not destroyed — they come straight back the day you upgrade. We will not delete a year of your history to make a point about billing.

The free tier is permanent
Not a trial that lapses. If a small place only ever needs 25 head, three pastures and the daily log, that stays free.

You're using the app while it's rough and telling us what's wrong with it. That's worth something, and we'll price it that way.
The fine print, in plain English
Is it actually free right now, or free-for-30-days free?
Actually free, with everything unlocked. There's no trial period and no card on file, because there's nothing to charge yet. The plans above are what we'll move to when the beta ends — they aren't in effect today.
When does the beta end?
We don't have a date, and we'd rather say that than invent one. When we do, you'll hear it well in advance — that's the first commitment in the list above.
Will I be charged automatically when it does?
You can't be — we don't hold a payment method. When paid plans arrive you'll have to pick one deliberately, and if you don't, you land on the free tier rather than losing your account.
What happens to my 400 head if I end up on the free tier?
They're hidden, not deleted. Records over the cap and modules your plan doesn't include stop showing up, and everything reappears exactly as it was the moment you upgrade. Nothing you entered gets destroyed by a billing change.
Do I pay per person?
No — you pay per ranch. The owner subscribes and everyone they invite is covered up to the seat count on the plan. If a worker helps at two different ranches, that's two ranches' subscriptions, not two of theirs.
What if I run more than one ranch?
Each ranch carries its own plan, because each one is its own set of records. A second place you barely touch can sit on the free tier while your main operation is on Ranch.
Can I get my data back out?
A one-click export isn't built yet, and we'd rather say so than imply a button that isn't there. It's on the list, and it's on it before we start charging anyone — asking for money for a system of record you can't get data out of isn't a trade we're willing to offer. Can I run Land & Herd on my own server?
No — Land & Herd is a hosted product at app.landandherd.com. There's no self-hosted distribution, and we won't pretend otherwise. More about what we don't claim →
